Key Terms Explained

  • State minimum limits are the liability limits which cover the other party if you cause an accident. For example, if your state minimum required is 25/50/25, this would mean:
    • 25,000 for bodily injury per person,
    • 50,000 for bodily injury for all persons per each accident
    • 25,000 for property damage per accident.
  • PIP/Personal injury protection. This is known as “no fault insurance.” This coverage helps you with expenses like lost wages, funeral costs, or medical bills. This coverage would pay out no matter who is at fault.
  •  MedPay/medical payments coverage. This helps pay for medical expenses up to a certain limit no matter whose fault the accident is. This coverage would also help pay for passengers’ injuries as well.
  • UM/UIM/Uninsured motorist and Underinsured motorist Uninsured motorist insurance protects you if you are involved in an accident with someone who does not have current insurance in place. Underinsured motorist insurance covers you when you are involved in an accident with a driver who does not have adequate liability limits on their insurance policy to cover your damages.
