Who is cheaper, Progressive or GEICO, and for whom
Liability only and clean records
Progressive: $87/mo median for liability-only (362 quotes) versus $116/mo for GEICO (18 quotes), and $140/mo versus $176/mo for clean records.
Full coverage
GEICO edged it: $193/mo median (27 quotes) versus $204/mo for Progressive (444 quotes). With only 27 GEICO quotes the gap is inside the noise, but it matches what we see on financed vehicles with clean records.
SR22, violations, or no prior insurance
Progressive. GEICO rarely quotes SR22 filings through us (1 quote), and Progressive’s SR22 median was $127/mo. For drivers with no prior insurance, Progressive’s median was $127/mo versus $151/mo.

Quotes are what carriers offered, not what every driver bought. “Clean record” means zero accidents, zero violations, and no DUI in the quote. Age bands use the primary driver’s age. How we collect quote data →
Where each carrier came out cheapest
- Progressive had the lowest median for: all quotes, liability only, clean record (no accidents, tickets, or dui), accidents, tickets, or dui on record, no prior insurance, currently insured, drivers under 25, drivers 25 to 39, drivers 40 to 59.
- GEICO had the lowest median for: full coverage.
The honest caveat: we quote Progressive about 18 times more often than GEICO, because GEICO’s underwriting through independent agents is narrower and its best rates go to clean-record, currently-insured drivers. That means the GEICO column is a smaller, cleaner group, which flatters it slightly. Where both carriers have real sample sizes (liability, full coverage, clean records, drivers 25 to 59), Progressive won three of four. State by state, most of these quotes are from Colorado (651 Progressive, 32 GEICO) and South Carolina (93 and 10); see the state pages linked below for local numbers.

What else separates them
Progressive
Snapshot telematics discount, strong app, same-day ID cards, and a wide appetite: SR22, non-owner, drivers with lapses, and high-risk profiles. Our most-quoted carrier in every state we serve.
GEICO
Competitive for clean records with full coverage and a strong self-service app. Narrower appetite through agents: rarely quotes SR22 or drivers with lapses, which is why it shows up less often in our data.
Progressive vs GEICO Questions
Progressive vs GEICO Questions
6 QuestionsIs Progressive or GEICO cheaper?
In our 2026 quotes, Progressive for most drivers: $145/month median versus $176/month, and cheaper for liability-only, clean records, and drivers 25 to 59. GEICO was slightly cheaper for full coverage ($193 versus $204). GEICO’s sample is small (46 quotes), so the honest answer is: compare both for your exact profile.
Why do you quote Progressive so much more than GEICO?
Because GEICO accepts fewer of the drivers who call an independent agency — SR22 filings, lapses, no prior insurance, thin credit. Progressive quotes almost everyone. When a driver qualifies for both, we run both.
Is GEICO cheaper for full coverage?
Slightly, in our data: $193/mo median versus $204/mo for Progressive. That lines up with GEICO’s strength on clean-record, currently-insured drivers with financed vehicles. The difference is small enough that a single discount can flip it.
Which is better for SR22 insurance?
Progressive. GEICO gave us 1 SR22 quote all year; Progressive gave us 48, with a median of $127/mo. See our SR22 insurance guide.
Which states are these quotes from?
Colorado, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Alaska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Colorado and South Carolina make up most of the data. For local comparisons see Progressive vs Bristol West in Colorado and Progressive vs National General in South Carolina.
Are these rates what I will pay?
No. They are medians of real quotes for a wide range of drivers in 11 states. Your state, ZIP code, vehicle, credit, coverage limits, deductible, and driving history will move your rate above or below these numbers. The table tells you which carrier to compare first.
How this comparison was built
Every number on this page comes from quotes our licensed agents ran between January and May 2026 (2,208 quotes across Colorado, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Alaska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), stored in our first-party quote dataset. A quote is what the carrier offered for that driver, vehicle, and coverage; it is not a policy sold. Medians are used instead of averages so a few very high-risk quotes do not distort the picture. Different drivers were quoted with different carriers, so this is a population comparison, not the same driver priced by each carrier. Segments with fewer than 7 quotes for a carrier are shown as “too few.” Full methodology: How we collect quote data.
