What is Arizona Liability Car Insurance?

Imagine there is a bubble around your vehicle. Arizona Liability car insurance covers injury to others and property that is outside of the bubble.

If you are at fault in an accident the liability portion of your auto insurance will pay up to certain amounts for certain things. This prevents your from being personally financially responsible up to the liability limits of your auto policy. Once you reach the limits of your liability auto policy you can still face out of pocket expenses.

Liability does not cover your vehicle or injury to you or the passengers in your vehicle. It does however cover bodily injury to others and property damage to others up to a set maximum.

Liability coverage is typically written as a series of 3 numbers separated by backslashes. For example: 25/50/15

All numbers are the amounts in thousands of dollars. The first number is total amount insurance will pay for bodily injury per person. The second number is the total insurance will pay per occurrence. The third number is the amount insurance will pay in property damage per occurrence.

Think of it this way you are at fault in an accident and 3 people had injuries each costing $10,000 and there was $10,000 in property damage.

  • Since your maximum per person is $25,000 their medical would be paid in full up to $50,000 total for that accident.
  • The property damage would also be covered since you are under your $15,000 maximum.

Arizona Liability Car Insurance Laws

Arizona requires a minimum of $25,000 per person in bodily injury, with a maximum of $50,000 per occurrence, and $15,000 in property damage.

This protects you up to those limits when at fault in an accident.

If you drive a lot or are concerned those limits aren’t enough – you are able to increase them. That will increase the total cost of the policy though.

If you are trying to find the cheapest and most affordable coverage required by the state – keeping your Arizona liability car insurance at the state minimum is the best way to do so.

Arizona by law requires all drivers operating a motorized vehicle to have liability insurance.

Is AZ a no fault state?

Unlike no-fault states, Arizona follows a fault-based system, meaning the responsible party bears the financial burden in an accident. To comply with Arizona law, drivers must maintain liability insurance coverage meeting specific minimums. These include $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. These minimums serve as a baseline for financial responsibility, though drivers may opt for higher coverage limits to better safeguard their assets and protect against potential liabilities. By ensuring compliance with Arizona’s liability car insurance regulations, drivers can navigate the state’s roads confidently, knowing they have the necessary coverage in place to meet legal requirements and protect themselves and others in the event of an accident.

Other Coverages Available in Arizona

There are several other coverages available in addition to liability coverage. While these are NOT required by law in Arizona, they can be sometimes required by the institution that finances your vehicles, your employer, or if you do any sort of ridesharing.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM): This coverage again is not required, but highly recommended. If you are ever in accident and the at fault driver is not insured this coverage will go into effect. It is also a great coverage to have if you have higher then the states required liability limits. In that circumstance, if the driver had liability insurance at the state minimum but you have 100/300/100 limits – the underinsured motorist coverage would raise their limits to meet yours and offer you more coverage from the accident.

Medical Payments: This coverage pays out up to a certain for medical expenses for you and those in your vehicle after an accident, regardless of who was at fault. This is another great additional coverage if you frequently have people in your vehicle or do not have health insurance.

Comprehensive & Collision Coverages (“Full Coverage”): These are two additional coverages that carry a deductible. The deductible is the portion that you as the insured are responsible to pay before coverages kicks in for covered losses. Both cover for damage to YOUR vehicle. Unlike liability which does not. If we think back to our bubble example – comprehensive and collision cover what is inside the bubble.

Comprehensive covers things such as theft, hail damage, a tree limb falling on your vehicle. An easy way to think of it is coverage for situations where the vehicle was not moving and did not impact another object.

Collision covers things such as damage from an at fault accident, impact from a deer, or any other types of impact/collision related damage.
This coverage is typically required when a vehicle is financed. Always check with your financial institution when purchasing a new vehicle to see what coverage they require and if they require a certain deductible.

Roadside Assistance/Towing/Rental Reimbursement: These are additional coverages. Roadside Assistance/Towing offers coverage for certain things such as lockouts, dead batteries, running out of gas, or a breakdown resulting in the vehicle needing to get moved to a repair shop. These services vary carrier to carrier so always make sure to check with your insurance provider.
Rental Reimbursement off a set amount towards a rental vehicle while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered loss. It ranges from $20-$100 per day up to 30 days.
