North Carolina Summary

This North Carolina report is our largest single-state dataset β€” 117 sold policies across 34 counties during 2024–2025. The geographic spread is exceptional: from coastal counties like New Hanover and Pender to the mountain counties of Buncombe (Asheville), Watauga, Ashe, and Madison, through the Piedmont Triad (Forsyth, Guilford, Davidson), Research Triangle (Wake, Durham, Chatham), and greater Charlotte (Mecklenburg, Union, Gaston) to Fayetteville (Cumberland) and the Sandhills (Moore).

The average monthly premium across the dataset is $123.36, with a median of $90.73 β€” the gap between mean and median reflects a right-skewed distribution driven by a handful of high-premium outlier policies (New Hanover at $337.17, Durham at up to $487.21, Cumberland at up to $481.48). The most data-rich counties β€” Buncombe (14), Mecklenburg (13), Wake (13), Durham (9), and Cumberland (8) β€” provide the most statistically meaningful benchmarks.

North Carolina’s coverage mix is notably diverse: non-owners (38%), full coverage (33%), liability-only (26%), and a renters and motorcycle policy rounding out the set. This reflects our specialty focus in NC β€” a high proportion of SR-22, compliance, and non-standard clients alongside standard full coverage drivers.

Frequently Asked Questions β€” North Carolina Auto Insurance

What does auto insurance cost across North Carolina counties based on real sold data?

Our North Carolina dataset is the largest in this multi-state series β€” 117 sold policies across 34 counties from 2024–2025. The average monthly premium statewide is $123.36 with a median of $90.73. Premiums ranged from $19.00/month (Cumberland County, bare compliance policy) to $487.21/month (Durham County, full coverage on a high-risk profile). Buncombe County (Asheville) is our deepest single-county dataset with 14 policies averaging $121.47 ranging from $42.69 to $389.05. Mecklenburg (Charlotte, 13 policies) averaged $79.61, Wake (Raleigh, 13 policies) averaged $124.46, and Durham (9 policies) averaged $158.11. The gap between the $123 mean and $90 median is driven by a small number of high-premium outliers; most of our NC clients paid $60–$170 per month.

Does North Carolina require uninsured motorist coverage?

Yes β€” and it’s one of the most protective UM rules in the South. North Carolina mandates uninsured motorist coverage at the 30/60 level on every policy, and it cannot be waived. Most states allow drivers to reject UM coverage in writing; North Carolina does not. This means every NC driver automatically has $30,000/$60,000 in uninsured motorist protection regardless of what else they chose or didn’t choose on their policy. Given North Carolina’s uninsured driver rate of approximately 7–9%, the mandatory UM requirement provides real protection at a relatively modest additional cost embedded in every policy. It’s one of the ways NC’s baseline coverage is genuinely stronger than most of its Southeastern neighbors.

What is the DL-123 form in North Carolina, and when is it required?

North Carolina uses a state-specific DL-123 form alongside the standard SR-22 for different financial responsibility situations. The DL-123 is filed for certain license reinstatement scenarios β€” particularly where a suspension was not directly tied to a DWI or serious moving violation but where the NCDMV nonetheless requires proof of insurance before reinstating the license. An SR-22 (used for DWI convictions and serious violation-related suspensions) is a different form with stricter conditions. If your NCDMV reinstatement letter specifies a DL-123, your insurer must file that specific form β€” not a generic SR-22. Progressive, National General, and Dairyland, the three main carriers in our 117-policy NC book, handle both DL-123 and SR-22 filings electronically with the NCDMV. When in doubt, your reinstatement paperwork will specify which form is required.

Why is the rate spread in Cumberland County (Fayetteville) so extreme?

Cumberland County β€” home to Fayetteville and adjacent to Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) β€” produced the widest internal rate spread of any county in our entire multi-state dataset: $19.00 to $481.48 across 8 policies, a 2,434% range. This extreme spread directly reflects the military market’s exceptional diversity of driver profiles. Fort Liberty is one of the largest military installations in the world, bringing in thousands of young enlisted service members who often need bare minimum liability compliance at very low cost. Those same ZIP codes also contain civilian populations with financed vehicles requiring full coverage, some drivers with violation histories, and higher-risk profiles across a wide economic spectrum. The $19 floor is almost certainly a bare compliance liability or non-owners policy for a clean-record junior enlisted driver; the $481 ceiling reflects a high-risk full coverage situation. Neither extreme is typical for a standard civilian Cumberland County driver.

What are North Carolina’s minimum auto insurance requirements?

North Carolina requires 30/60/25 liability coverage: $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. North Carolina is a tort (at-fault) state with no mandatory PIP. The 30/60 bodily injury minimum is higher than most neighboring states β€” Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia’s previous standard all required only 25/50. As noted, uninsured motorist coverage at 30/60 is mandatory on every NC policy. The higher minimums and non-waivable UM combine to make North Carolina’s baseline coverage meaningfully more protective than most of its neighbors β€” the extra premium cost is modest, but the coverage floor is substantially higher.

Is auto insurance cheaper in Charlotte than in Raleigh or Asheville?

In raw averages, yes β€” but the comparison needs context. Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) averaged $79.61 across 13 policies, lower than Wake (Raleigh, $124.46) and Buncombe (Asheville, $121.47). However, our Charlotte book is heavily weighted toward non-owners and liability-only policies, which run cheaper than full coverage. For standard full coverage auto, Charlotte typically runs $150–$260+/month β€” comparable to Raleigh and somewhat above smaller cities. Durham (9 policies, avg $158.11) runs the highest among the Research Triangle counties, reflecting a more diverse urban risk mix and a higher proportion of full coverage policies in our Durham data. Asheville’s mountain location adds some accident exposure from winding roads and winter weather, keeping rates roughly on par with the Triangle metros despite a lower population density.

Which insurance carriers does A Plus Insurance use for North Carolina, and why does it matter?

Our 117-policy NC book runs through four carriers: Progressive (67 policies, 57%), National General (27 policies, 23%), Dairyland (22 policies, 19%), and ePremium (1 policy). The multi-carrier spread is why carrier comparison matters β€” National General is often the most competitive for NC non-owners and compliance liability, Dairyland is strong in the non-owners and mountain-county market, and Progressive covers a broader spectrum from clean-record standard policies to moderate-risk situations. A driver who gets a quote only from Progressive may miss a National General price that’s $20–$40/month cheaper for their specific profile, or vice versa. Comparing across all three through a single agency call is the most efficient way to find the right rate for your North Carolina situation.
