MINIMUM CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS: WHAT IS LIABILITY?

Car insurance liability refers to the portion of an auto insurance policy that covers the policyholder’s legal responsibility for bodily injury or property damage caused to others in a car accident. It is a mandatory coverage in most jurisdictions to ensure that individuals have financial protection if they cause harm to others while driving.

Liability coverage typically consists of two components: bodily injury liability and property damage liability.

It’s important to note that liability coverage only applies to damages and injuries caused to others, not to the policyholder’s own vehicle or personal injuries. For that, additional coverage such as collision and comprehensive insurance would be needed.

  1. Bodily injury liability: This coverage helps pay for the medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and legal costs incurred by individuals injured in an accident caused by the policyholder. It may also cover claims if the accident results in death. The policy will have a maximum limit for the amount the insurance company will pay per person injured or per accident.
  2. Property damage liability: This coverage assists in paying for the repair or replacement of other people’s property damaged as a result of the policyholder’s car accident. It can include damage to other vehicles, buildings, fences, or any other property involved. Similar to bodily injury liability, there will be a maximum limit per accident for property damage liability as well.

MINIMUM CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS: WHAT IS UNINSURED MOTORIST?

MINIMUM CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

UM/UIM coverage is typically optional in many jurisdictions, although some states require it to be offered as part of the auto insurance policy. It provides a valuable safety net to ensure that you are protected even if the other driver lacks adequate insurance. It’s important to review your insurance policy and consider adding UM/UIM coverage to protect yourself in case of such situations.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is a type of auto insurance that protects you if you are involved in an accident with a driver who either has no insurance or has insufficient insurance coverage to fully compensate you for your losses.

When a driver is legally required to have liability insurance but fails to maintain it or if you’re involved in a hit-and-run accident where the other driver cannot be identified, uninsured motorist coverage comes into play. It helps cover your medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages resulting from the accident caused by an uninsured driver.
