• Coverage that pays for bodily injury and property damage when you’re at fault in an accident. It does not cover you or your vehicle. An easy way to put is imagine you and your car have a bubble around it. Liability coverage covers everything that’s outside the bubble if you are at fault in an accident.

[Liability is required in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The only state that does not require liability insurance is New Hampshire.]

×

• Coverage helps cover cost of damages to your vehicle from accidents that are not collision related. A great example is theft and vandalism or hail damage.

• Comprehensive carries a deductible. In most cases you get to select the deductible. The higher the deductible you choose – the cheaper your insurance will be. So if choose a $1,000 deductible and your car gets damaged by hail; you will have to pay $1,000. Then insurance will pick up the remaining cost.

×

• Coverage that helps pay for damages to your vehicle from an accident, regardless of who is at fault. A good example would be if you back into a concrete pole in a parking lot. Collision insurance will help you pay for that damage.

• Just like comprehensive insurance – collision insurance typically carries a deductible. So before insurance will pay for the damage associated with you backing into the pole, you’d have to pay your deductible.

×

• These coverages cover you if you and your passengers are in an accident with someone who doesn’t have any insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

×

• Is to help cover the cost of you or your passengers medical expenses regardless of who was at fault for the accident.

×

• Rental reimbursement is an added coverage to help cover the cost of a rental while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim was made to the insurance company. Insurance companies give you a certain dollar amount per day towards a rental.

• Roadside assistance is another added coverage to cover the cost of when you: need a tow, run out gas, lock yourself out of your car, need a jumpstart, or need help putting the spare tire on after a flat.

Is Montana a No Fault State?

The short answer is no. In Montana the financial responsibility falls on the driver found at least 50 percent negligent in the accident.

After an accident if you were found not at fault there are a few ways you can proceed:

  1. File a claim with your own insurance. They will more than likely then reach out to the at fault drivers insurance company and file a subrogation claim. Which in the ends makes them the ones paying the claim.
  2. File a third party claim directly with the at fault drivers insurance company.
  3. File a lawsuit against the at fault driver in civil court. This should only be considered if the driver is uninsured.

Montana Liability Insurance & SR22

An SR22 is a state filling. It is an additional form attached to your auto policy in Montana that allows the state to better track your insurance.

An SR22 is typically required after a major auto violation or accident. There also other reasons such as driving without insurance.

Once you are required to have an SR22, the state of Montana will require to have it for a set amount time. It is important to avoid a lapse in coverage. If you have a lapse in coverage it may extend the period of time you are required to have the SR22 in Montana.

A concern for a lot of Montanan's is that they do not own a vehicle but are required to have an SR22. In this case you would want to speak with one of skilled agents regarding a non-owners policy.

Non-Owners Insurance: Montana Liability

Non-Owners insurance is a type of policy that meets the state requirements for liability in Montana when you do not own a vehicle. It does allow for an SR22 to be added. However, coverage is limited.

Non-Owners does not allow for certain coverages to be added. The only coverage available outside of liability is uninsured motorist and medical payments. Comprehensive & Collision, Roadside Assistance, and Rental Reimbursement can not be added to this type of policy.

These policies also do not allow for additional drivers to be added.

Non-Owners policies are also restrictive when it comes to which vehicles you are covered to drive. Typically you cannot drive any vehicle that you have regular access to or is registered to a household member. The best way to confirm this information is by speaking with one of our wonderful agents.

Liability VS Full Coverage: Which should you get?

While liability insurance may be the cheapest option, there a few things to consider.

Below is a calculator to help determine what type of coverage you should get. However, if you are unsure our agents don't mind giving you a quote for both!
