Michigan requires some of the highest liability limits in the United States. Drivers may choose to lower these limits to $50,000/$100,000 with a signature opting to do so. It is not recommended to lower the limits from the minimum required.
Property Damage is required at $10,000, but suggested to carry much higher. Potentially, the lowest limit you can purchase in Michigan, with a signature opting for lower, is 50/100/10, but it is not recommended!
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is also required by law with a few options available. You can choose Unlimited PIP coverage, $500,000, $250,000, $50,000 (with Medicaid), or opt-out (only drivers with a qualifying health insurance plan that covers car accident injuries). Property Protection Insurance is also required by law, at 1 Million.

MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: How To Get A Motorcycle License
In Michigan, you must carry a valid Michigan License in order to get a Motorcycle Endorsement on your license. After you’ve completed a vision and written knowledge test you can obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (if you are not already licensed).
They recommend you practice for up to 180 days with an endorsed motorcyclist and then pass a rider skills test – results will then be submitted to the Secretary of State.
You will receive an email with Instructions about the next steps if you passed your skills test.
The fee for licensing is $16 application fee.
What Happens If I’m Caught Driving Without Insurance?
Driving without auto insurance can lead to severe consequences, such as hefty fines, license suspension, and even legal penalties. It may result in increased insurance premiums, vehicle impoundment, or difficulty obtaining coverage in the future.
Michigan Insurance Discounts
Insurance companies are able to offer drivers a wide array of Michigan insurance discounts, which we all know can lead to instant savings! Who does not love to save money on their Motorcycle Insurance? Some of the common discounts include, paperless discount, Auto Pay/EFT, Pay in full discount and continuous Insurance discount.
Other discounts that not all companies offer are driver experience, safety course completion, and Group Affiliation discount. It is recognized that members of a motorcycle group are more likely to practice safe driving and abide by all the laws which leads to less accidents/claims.
Still other Michigan insurance discounts that are implemented by rating factors are marital status, multiple operators, multiple vehicles (motorcycles) and location.

MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: RATING FACTORS
Rating factors are used by Insurance companies when determining a risk and calculating the premium for each potential insured to get the cheapest Michigan motorcycle insurance rates.
These rating factors include the location and amount of accidents/claims in that area. The drivers experience and driving history such as accidents, claims, and tickets on their driving record.
Marital status, gender and age are all rating factors as well. The idealistic customer is an experienced driver (in late 20s to 30s) with a clean driving history, living in an area with fewer people (this generally means fewer accidents and claims).
Drivers that meet this criteria will see lower Insurance prices, whereas younger drivers with a long history of violations will pay more for their insurance.
Lastly, the type of Motorcycle you are insuring and the coverages desired are both big rating factors. You will generally pay less on an older bike that you are insuring for liability only, versus a brand new bike with full coverage.

The cost for liability insurance on a Motorcycle can be surprisingly inexpensive. Usually the difference in liability limits if you opt for higher is a matter of dollars, and sometimes the difference between liability and full coverage can be a matter of dollars as well.
It never hurts to ask your insurance agent to play around with the coverages to get you the best coverage for your money. Most liability policies will range from $5-$15 a month, depending on the driver, type of bike, and coverages selected.
Most companies include Trip Interruption/Roadside, and accessory coverage onto all liability policies. Trip Interruption will pay out a certain amount if you are over a certain amount of miles from your residence, and you are broken down. This will pay for a tow, transportation and food/lodging.
Accessory coverage and Safety Riding apparel coverage pays out if your bike has custom accessories that were damaged in an accident, and your riding apparel such as helmet, goggles, leather jacket, chaps, and gloves if damaged in an accident.
These coverages will typically require receipts to be shown in the event of a claim. Make sure to ask your Insurance agent if these coverages are included in your Liability only policy.
MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: COVERAGE OPTIONS
The most basic coverage available for your motorcycle insurance policy is Liability Only.
Liability will cover the other parties’ bodily injury expenses and property damage up to your liability limit, for what you are liable for (also known as At Fault).
Most liability policies come with additional coverages like Roadside/Trip Interruption, Safety Riding Apparel, and Accessory coverage. You can also choose to add Uninsured Motorist and full coverage to your policy.
Full coverage consists of Comprehensive and Collision.
Comprehensive will cover things like theft, hail, vandalism, glass breakage, and impact with an animal. Collision covers an impact with a vehicle or object. Most motorcycle insurance policies are so cheap, that it can be a matter of dollars to go from liability coverage, to full coverage so it is always worth it to ask your agent to check the prices on both.

MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: Full Coverage Rates
Most Insurance companies charge very competitive prices for motorcycle insurance policies because they are usually not valued as high as a car or truck would be.
Some companies can only charge the minimum on a quote, which means the cost for liability could be the same as what full coverage would be, if not just a little more monthly. You should always ask your insurance agent to go over all the different coverage scenarios to see what works best for you and your wallet.
If full coverage is a matter of pennies more, why not carry it? A good insurance agent should be able to go over everything with you and answer any questions you should have.
MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: CHEAPEST insurance rates by city
Motorcycle Insurance prices differ depending upon the area that you are in. A location with a higher population generally leads to more accidents and insurance claims.
The prices will be higher in those areas depending upon the rate revision that they do every few months. Even the surrounding areas to highly populated zip codes will be more expensive in comparison to a smaller town with fewer drivers. MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: Laws You Need To Know
First, you must carry a Motorcycle Endorsement on your license to operate a motorcycle on public roads.
As long as you are 21 years of age, or have at least $20,000 in first- party medical benefits, or have had a MC endorsement for at least 2 years, operators and passengers are not required to wear a helmet, although it is encouraged.
Motorcycles must all have front and rear wheel breaks, headlight, tail light, stop-light, muddler, horn, rear-view mirror, and permanently attached seat.
Signaling turns is also a legal requirement. Motorcyclists are entitled to use a full lane. Motorcycles with engines smaller than 125 cc are not permitted on freeways or limited highway access.
MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE MICHIGAN: Which Companies Offer It?
Not all Insurance companies offer Motorcycle Insurance, even if they specialize in other products such as auto and home. Most reputable companies do offer Motorcycle Insurance in Michigan because it makes it easier to bundle multiple products which leads to additional savings for the customer.
Number 1 to look for when you are researching a new insurance company is their customer reviews, and overall ratings on JD Power and AMs Best. These sites rate Insurance companies based on several factors such as their customer service, claims process (payout and wait time), prices, etc.
Some smaller companies are able to offer more affordable prices, but that does not mean that they have the best service. You should also consider asking the Insurance companies which discounts they offer, and what other products they offer to get additional savings.
